Alan and Carlene Baharlou Distinguished Service Award of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Full Criteria | Nomination Form

The Baharlou Distinguished Service Award is designed to recognize a member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has developed a record of outstanding service that supports and contributes to the teaching and research missions of the College. The ideal candidate for the award shall be a faculty member or department chair:
  • With a distinguished record of service that extends beyond the department to include outstanding service to the College, the University, the community and/or major professional organizations.
  • Whose record of service contributions is long-term and extends beyond the present academic year.
  • Whose commitment to service is supported by excellence in the classroom and a commitment to scholarship.

Hanner Teaching Excellence Award

The Hanner Teaching Excellence Award is designed to celebrate and honor consistent excellence in teaching. The ideal candidate for the award shall be:
  • A faculty member who is recognized by both colleagues and students as a teacher of the highest caliber, dedicated to the learning enterprise.
  • A teacher who is involved in creative teaching and learning activities outside the boundaries of traditional course work.
  • A teacher who challenges students to fulfill their potential as learners.
  • A teacher who demonstrates teaching excellence across all courses offered.

James K. and Wanda L. Johnson Award

Full Criteria | Application Form

The purpose of this fund is to provide faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences with assistance in the pursuit of their individual research or development activities, the presentation of special conferences or guest speakers, the development of study abroad activities, interdisciplinary programs/courses, and the advancement of technology in the classroom.  The criteria are as follows:
  • Must be tenured, tenure-track or annually contracted faculty
  • Must submit a one to two page narrative outlining the purpose of the request and its potential impact upon the overall academic quality of their department
  • Selection will be based upon the overall quality of the proposal and its potential for contributing to the advancement of the academic programs in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
  • Recipient shall be eligible to apply for and receive the award again provided s/he continues to meet the criteria stated above.

Lawrence A. Ringenberg Award

The Ringenberg Award is the highest faculty honor bestowed by Eastern Illinois University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The award is named in honor of Lawrence A. Ringenberg, the first dean of Arts and Sciences at EIU, serving from 1961-1980. In the tradition of Dr. Ringenberg, this award recognizes excellence in our academic community. The award is given to tenured faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for exceptional performance during their academic career at Eastern Illinois University. The award criteria are:
  • A published scholar who has developed a national or international reputation in his or her field.
  • A teacher of the highest caliber, dedicated to helping students achieve their personal and professional goals.
  • A person with a distinguished record of service to his or her Department, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the University, and/or his or her profession.
  • Due date: March 1, 2024

Lida G. Wall Faculty Research Mentor Award

The Lida G. Wall Faculty Research Mentor Award is an annual honor bestowed on a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has served as a research mentor to one or more undergraduate students during the last two years. The ideal candidate:
  • Must be a tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Must be recognized by both colleagues and students as being a dedicated, outstanding undergraduate research mentor and teacher.
  • Must have been engaged in an active mentoring research role resulting in student publications and/or presentations during the last two years.
  • Will be eligible for re-nomination four years after receiving the award.
  • Due date: March 1, 2024

Outstanding Faculty Award

The CLAS Student Deans recognize an outstanding faculty member from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences each year.  The nominating student honors the award recipient at the CLAS Awards Ceremony.
  • Write a short essay (up to 500 words) explaining why you think this professor deserves the Outstanding Faculty Award.
  • The recipient will be selected by the CLAS Student Deans.
  • Due date: March 1, 2024

Unit B Research/Scholarship/Creativity and/or Service Achievement Award

Nomination Form

This award recognizes the professional activities in research and scholarship/creativity and/or service to department, college, and campus. All Unit B faculty in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are eligible to be nominated. An eligible faculty member may not receive an award in more than two consecutive academic years. One award of $250 each for faculty in the Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Humanities, and Fine/Performing Arts. 
  • Must be a full-time Unit B faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Due date: March 1, 2024

The 2023 Celebration of Scholarship, Creativity, and Engagement will be held Wednesday, October 25th from 4-5pm in the Doudna Concourse.

Previously known as Publishing Scholars, this event, sponsored by The Division of Academic Affairs, celebrates the creative accomplishments of our faculty and staff here at Eastern Illinois University by showcasing their recent publications and creative works. Also honored in this reception are grants received through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

  • Only publications that have been externally reviewed/juried/refereed should be included.
  • For creative works, they must be off campus, invited, or juried submissions.
  • Works listed in previous Celebration of Publications, Creative Works, and Grants brochures should not be included.
  • Only works from August 1 - July 31 of the most recent year should be included.
  • CLAS submissions are due by September 8, 2023.

 

Research/Creative Activity/Special Project Credit Unit Pool

Eligibility

All tenured Unit A faculty in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences may apply.  An eligible faculty member may not receive an award in more than two consecutive academic years.  Members of the college-level review committee are not eligible to apply.  Please note: For proposals of approximately equal merit, preference will be given to applicants who did not receive an award in the previous academic year.

All proposals shall be submitted electronically via MachForm. Proposals may not be altered once they have been submitted. The deadline for submissions is October 21, 2024.  Please read the guidelines for more information.
