History

Since its inception in 1967, Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Health Education Honorary, has had a rich history of contributions to the profession of health education and health promotion. The idea for a national honorary for health education professionals was conceived in the minds of three individuals, Warren E. Schaller, HSD, William Bock, PhD, and Robert J. Synovitz, HSD, on their way home from a national convention. It was through the further commitment of a group of dedicated professors and students Ball State University that the first chapter of the honorary was established. Today, there are over eighty chapters representing thousands of students in colleges and universities around the United States.

Mission

The mission of the honorary is promotion of the discipline by elevating the standards, ideals, competence and ethics of professionally prepared men and women in Health Education.

Goals

  • Supporting the planning, implementation and evaluation of health education programs and resources

  • Stimulating and disseminating scientific research

  • Motivating and providing health education services

  • Recognizing academic achievement

  • Supporting health education advocacy initiatives

  • Promoting professional standards and ethics

  • Promoting networking activities among health educators and related professionals

The Eta Stigma Gamma insignia reflects the ideals of teaching, service, and research. The lamp of learning utilized in installation/initiation ceremonies represent the unifying element of the three ideals. The colors are gold and green.

The Honorary's national office publishes its own newsletter: The Vision. The official professional journal of Eta Sigma Gama isThe Health Educator.

Beta Nu Chapter

The Beta Nu Chapter of Eastern Illinois University became a national charter member on April 18, 1982. We were the 60th chapter to be installed in the United States. Beta Nu Chapter received the Service Activity of the Year Award in 1994, The Chapter of the Year Award in 1995, and the Teaching Activity of the year Award in 1999.

The Beta Nu Chapter of ESG is the active health education honorary at Eastern Illinois University. We invite you to participate in some of our chapter activities such as teaching, research, and service projects; student/faculty collaborated projects, volunteers opportunities, professional conference attendance, professional involvement opportunities, job and intern information, etc.

Membership

Official initiation into ESG requires the following:

  • Have a GPA of 2.70 
  • Participate in at least 5 ESG activities within the Teaching, Service, and Research areas. 
  • Attend the Initiation Ceremony.

The cost of initiation is $50.00 and includes:

  • An official Eta Sigma Gamma pin
  • Subscription to The Health Educator - official journal of Eta Sigma Gamma
  • Subscription to The Vision - the official newsletter of Eta Sigma Gamma
  • Certificate
