EIU Student Impact Grants for Faculty Mentors

The purpose of the EIU Student Impact Grant for Faculty Mentors is to support faculty who engage in high impact student practices.  High impact practices include, but are not limited to, projects intended to result in publications with student co-authors, joint research endeavors with students that are accessible to external audiences,  partnerships with local community organizations or schools, public displays of research and/or new creative works, and other projects that lead to external recognition of EIU.

These grants are more limited in scope than are grants from the Council on Faculty Research (CFR). Student Impact Grants must be used to support both students and faculty members.

Amount: Up to $1,500 per grant

Eligibility: Full time faculty (Unit A or B) who will be interacting with or mentoring at least one undergraduate or graduate student during the academic year are eligible. Eligibility is biennial, i.e., no one is eligible for two consecutive years.

Duration: Each grant will carry an expiration date that coincides with the end of the fiscal year in which it is awarded. Funds must be expended during the fiscal year in which they are awarded and spent by May 1 (or deadline set by the Business Office if earlier).

Total Funding: Depending on available resources, up to $15,000 will be available for the 2024-2025 grant program.

 
Allowable Expenses:
  • Direct expenses of student research and creativity (e.g. travel, student wages, equipment, resources, and supplies) occurring during the academic year.
  • Travel to disseminate student research and/or creative work products   
  • Faculty expenses associated with high impact activities

Submission of Proposals:

Proposals should be submitted by email to eiugrants@eiu.edu by noon on the advertised due date. Late proposals will not be reviewed.

Application Requirements

Faculty applicants should provide a one-page document (11 point font, single spaced, 1-inch margins) that includes:

  • A summary of prior student engagement and or mentoring activities (in addition to required duties related to your position).
  • A summary of student impact activities that are anticipated for the upcoming academic year including how this grant will generate external recognition to EIU. 
  • A description of the outcome of any prior Student Impact Grants, noting tangible external impact achieved.
  • A description of how the funds would be utilized if awarded, with specific reference to projected external impact.

Selection Process & Notification:

Applications will be reviewed by selected members of the Council on Faculty Research who will then make recommendations to the L.M. Hamand Dean of the Graduate School.  Applicants will be notified of the outcome no later than December.
