Studio Land Arts

Residency: January 9–28, 2023
Exhibition: February 17–March 11, 2023

Studio Gallery

Artist-in-Residence Chris Carl of Studio Land Arts will transform a working studio gallery into an exhibition space as he develops a large-scale land art project for the Tarble, one which will officially break ground later in the year. Working closely with graduate students in EIU's art department, the Tarble's undergraduate staff, and other on- and off-campus partners, Carl will apply principles of architecture, design, and craft toward a work that invites reflections about the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscapes. The result of this real-time experimentation and exploration will yield, in the end, a project that is deeply indebted to the network of community participants who help the artist shape and refine his vision.

Studio Land Arts was founded by Artist-Designer-Builder Chris Carl after receiving his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Illinois in 2014.  Working collaboratively from an ethos that positions the fields of Art, Design, and Craft as an ideal triad for relating to our built and natural environments, Studio Land Arts creates spaces that investigate systems, offer sustainable solutions, and provide platforms for engagement with each other and the world around us.  In the work of Studio Land Arts, art invites exploration, design articulates solutions, and craft allows actualization. Studio Land Arts projects have been realized at many different sites and scales, from abandoned parking lots to nationally recognized museums.
