The Simple Steps to Becoming EIU

To be eligible for degree candidacy, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School. Please note: Admission to the program is competitive. The following admission process pertains to the applicants to the Master of Science in Sustainability degree program. Students must be admitted into the Graduate School before they are eligible for the Sustainability program, which requires a separate application form.

The Sustainability program is designated as a STEM degree, regardless of which option is pursued. International students are eligible for 3 years of OPT upon graduation. However, the program is open to students of all majors with a wide variety of courses available.

Step 1: Apply to the Graduate School

All students can apply to the graduate school through MyEIU. The graduate school requires:

  1. A complete online application
  2. A copy of your official transcripts
  3. A $30 application fee

Step 2: Apply to the Program

Applicants must meet the requirements by the Graduate School and/or International Office, including application fees, and official transcript(s) (for applicants receiving undergraduate degree from institutions other than EIU). International students must also submit an acceptable score report for English proficiency established by the university such as TOEFL.

In addition, you will need to be prepared to submit the following with your MyEIU program application:

  1. A one-page professional Statement of Goals to demonstrate relevant experience and desire to work in the field of sustainability.
  2. Two email addresses for recommenders who will address your academic and professional potential in the field of sustainability.
  3. A brief resume (no more than 2 pages) showing the educational preparation and related experience (Email acceptable)

Deadlines for Applications:

  1. Fall Semester - Domestic Students: August 1
  2. Fall Semester - International Students: May 15
  3. Spring Semester - Domestic Students: December 15
  4. Spring Semester - International Students: October 15

Step 3: Apply for an Assistantship

If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you also need to submit a graduate assistantship application in addition to the Graduate School and program application. If you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact Dr. Hugo at nhugo@eiu.edu

Applicants should demonstrate research and outreach skills. Qualifications include at least a 3.0 GPA, studying sustainability, and evidence of research/outreach experience. Graduate assistants will be responsible for conducting or assisting faculty with research projects related to sustainable initiatives and overseeing CENCERE (Center for Clean Energy Research and Education) for visitors. Other tasks will be assigned as needed throughout the semester.

Skill sets of a Graduate Assistant include the ability to communicate well, work independently and in groups, develop new ideas and initiatives, and takes the initiative in completing tasks.

Graduate assistantships are typically awarded in accordance with the academic year. Assistantship applications are normally accepted through the middle of February; a decision for the next academic year comes within a month.
