If you have a passion for music performance and want to share your talent with the world, a degree in Music Performance might be a great fit for you. The Music Performance program at EIU provides students the opportunity to develop skills to succeed in the music profession or to pursue advanced degrees in music performance.
In addition to academic preparation in music, with weekly lessons on your instrument or voice, ensemble performances, and recitals, you will develop the musical and technical skills to forge your path as a professional musician! The three concentrations available allow for specialization based on your performing area:
All students in the Instrumental, Keyboard, and Vocal Concentrations complete a series of three recitals. We hope you enjoy these videos from recent performances!
Thomas Karunas, with Alice Gong on the piano, performs Pining for Keumkang Mountain (1961) by Youngseob Choi (b. 1929), in the Recital Hall of the Doudna Fine Arts Center.
Trevor Huffman (horn) and Ethan Hayward (piano) perform Mvt I, Massig bewegt, from Paul Hindemith's Sonata for Horn on April 11, 2021 in the Recital Hall of the Doudna Fine Arts Center

"Every day my professors guide me with ample amounts of patience and enthusiasm, and I genuinely see that they want me to succeed. I also absolutely love that they are so incredibly talented and passionate for their art. Witnessing this helps me set goals for myself in hopes of becoming more like them."
Christina Peter – Music Performance, voice ‘18"I came to Eastern because of the incredible music faculty, but my expectations have been blown away by the amount of talent, dedication, and care I have seen received from them. The small class sizes provide a great personal environment, and the teachers are always available for help and advice. Because of Dr. Cheetham I have plenty of playing opportunities in and outside of school, and his private lessons have been crucial in developing my musicianship and practice habits. I am constantly pushed and encouraged to reach my full potential, and I can't imagine having a better college experience."
Chris Fryer – Music Performance, trumpet ‘17"I chose EIU because I believe that the professors are committed to helping each individual achieve academic excellence. My favorite part about attending EIU is the sense of community and the support from not only the professors, but other students too. "
Crystal Bragg – Music Performance, flute ‘19"Some people back home told me not to attend a university in the US because I could learn the same at a local one for less. Deciding to ignore them was one of the best decisions of my life. As an international student from Cali, Colombia, I had no idea what I would find at Eastern. All I knew was that thanks to the financial aid they offered me, I would be allowed to begin my dream. However, I soon learned there is a beautiful world here that many have yet to discover. Eastern is full of intelligent, talented, supportive and dedicated professors. Between the excellent percussion studio, large ensembles, classroom work and the many concerts given each semester, the music department has exposed me to musical experiences from all over the world, and has turned me into a well-rounded performer. Thanks to my teachers here, I have grown musically more than I ever expected. Also, I have learned that as painful as hard work might seem sometimes, it undoubtedly makes me a better performer and musician. I am proud to be EIU.”
