EIU music major and Tarble staff member Francis Morales will perform a selection of music on the French horn in response to his conversations with Marie Bannerot McInerney about her site-specific installation Falling into Milk.
Scarlet Waltz (James Naigus 1987-)
This selection has an overall melancholy feel, with the horn playing a lush and soft melody leading to a crescendo into a more emotionally driven middle section before slowing down to end. The piece is in a ¾ time signature, which lends a waltz and dance-like feeling.
Morceau De Concert (Camille Saint-Saens 1835-1921)
This is a three-movement piece originally for Solo Horn and Orchestra and later for Solo Horn and Piano. The section played for this recital is only the second movement, which is sustained and lyrical compared to the fast, rhythmic, and articulate first and third movements. The second movement also shows off the Horn’s flexibility in the low register and a hand-stopping technique that allows play in a different timbre.
Folk Songs for Horn and Piano: Movement 1 (Alegria) Movement 7 (Shenandoah) (Paul Basler 1963-)
The first movement of this selection is based on Alegria, which means joyful or happiness in Spanish. It is based on a Puerto Rican Christmas folk song about Joesph, Mary, and the birth of Jesus Christ. This movement is very lyrical, allowing the horn to sing out in certain sections. The seventh and final movement is based on the folk song Shenandoah. The folk song dates back to the early 19th century and has become a popular sea shanty. The movement is split into three sections, each with a slightly different rhythm crescendoing and decrescendoing in both tempo and volume.
