Join us for a closing reception to celebrate the exhibition Who Speaks for the Oceans? with a live performance of a commissioned composition by musicians Brad Decker and Jamie V. Ryan in response to Jenny Kendler and Andrew Bearnot’s Whale Bells.
Brad Decker is a composer, educator, and performer of contemporary concert music. His works often incorporate electronic, electroacoustic, or interactive media, and recent works explore the interaction of acoustic instruments and electronics to create immersive composite textures. His instrumental works combine virtuosic flourishes, polyrhythmic interplay, and extended techniques. Electronic elements include interactive computer processing and sampling, multichannel diffusion, and fixed-media accompaniments. As a double bassist, he regularly performs his own compositions and improvisations that incorporate computer interactivity. He currently teaches music composition and electronic music at EIU.
Percussionist Jamie V. Ryan thrives on playing and teaching many types of music. He performs regularly with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Heartland Festival Orchestra, and he co-founded the Africa->West Percussion Trio, which plays original works influenced by the African Diaspora and the Western tradition. Ryan is also the drummer in Sun Stereo and has played with Tim Whalen’s Trio, Nonet, Tribute to Art Blakey, the Leo Sidran band, avant-metal group Freighter, and numerous other groups in the jazz, rock, and Latin music genres. He is an Associate Professor of Percussion at EIU.
