Visit your PAWS account and click on the Student Records tab to view your assigned advisor. Your advisor’s contact information is also available on their faculty page. You will need to meet with your advisor each semester before registering for classes and we also recommend setting up an initial meeting to discuss your academic plans when you are first assigned a new advisor.
Absolutely. However, quick questions often lead to lengthy conversations concerning documents or course requirements. Since our departmental undergraduate advisors are available during the spring and fall terms, please make an effort to meet by appointment during that time for the most accurate and comprehensive exchange of information. During the summer, additional assistance is available from the department chair. When you email your advisor, please include your name, E-number, and questions so they can assist you as quickly as possible.
Bring a completed copy of either the Sociology Curriculum Guide or the Criminology Curriculum Guide for your major or both if you have chosen to double major. Review your online Degree Audit, available through your PAWS account, and familiarize yourself with the remaining requirements/courses for your program, using the Curriculum Guide to document completed items and courses you plan to add to your schedule for the upcoming academic period. If it is your first time meeting with your advisor, it is also recommended to bring a copy of the 4-year Degree Plan that corresponds to your degree program. You can find blank copies of all the department Degree Plans and Curriculum Guides under the Forms and Applications tab.
Your advisor will also have reviewed your Degree Audit prior to your appointment. Using this information, the two of you will work together to review your academic plan, select the best courses to fulfill any outstanding requirements, and complete your online Advising Worksheet, which will include notes from your appointment, courses that you might consider, and your unique registration PIN for the upcoming semester. You will not be able to complete registration without the PIN number your advisor provides.
Registration dates are published for the upcoming academic period by the Office of the Registrar. Your registration start date is determined by your class standing: freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. In the registration area in your PAWS account, select Add or Drop Classes to build a schedule based on the courses you and your advisor discussed during your meeting. Schedule Planner is also available on PAWS to help you find specific class times that best fit your busy schedule.
Your advisor will assist you with understanding your catalog and curriculum requirements with the help of your Advising Worksheet. Feel free to ask your advisor for an updated copy during your registration advising appointment. Your advisor will be happy to help guide you in your academic goals in Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology!
