The Academic Intervention (AIC) Clinic at Eastern Illinois University provides high quality, evidence-based academic assessment and intervention services to school-aged (K-12) students in the community.
The Clinic is run by school psychology graduate students as part of their advanced practicum training experience (PSY 6890A: Advanced Practicum).
The AIC includes 10-weekly, assessment and intervention focused sessions. This clinic focuses on reading intervention, but other academic areas may be considered. Parents and guardians will receive weekly updates on their child's progress and learn how to implement the interventions used in clinic with their children at home to promote reading.
School Psychology graduate students in their second year have completed several courses in individual assessment, theories of learning, behavior therapy, and special topics in school psychology that have provided them with the knowledge and skills to effectively work with students needing academic intervention. In addition, during their second year, school psychology students work in the schools under the supervision of a licensed school psychologist. Graduate student clinicians are supervised in AIC by a licensed psychologist.
School-aged (K-12) children are invited to participate in the AIC.
To participate in the AIC, children first come to the clinic to participate in an initial screening and in-take session to determine whether they qualify for AIC. Parents complete paperwork and an in-take interview with a graduate student clinician, while another graduate student clinician completes reading screening measures with your child. The screening session takes approximately 20-30 min. Children who meet screening criteria will be invited to participate in the 10-week AIC clinic which focuses on intervention and ongoing progress monitoring.
Screenings take place mid-late September. For specific screening dates or to arrange a screening, contact the graduate student clinic coordinator by email aiclinic@eiu.edu or 217-581-2323.
Weekly, 45-minute sessions take place near the end of September and continue to the beginning of December (no session fall break/Thanksgiving week). Sessions take place at 3:30, 4:30, and 5:30 pm on Wednesdays. Based on screening information, children are assigned to 1-2 graduate clinician(s) who provide ongoing intervention and assessment to your child.
During the 10-week clinic, graduate clinicians also provide progress monitoring updates to parents/guardians. Parents also receive information on how they can implement intervention supports at home with their child.
The AI Clinic does not bill insurance for the cost of services. The cost to participate in AIC is approx. $80 dollars (cash or check made out to the EIU Psychology Department) in total. Please reference the current flyer or email the clinic to inquire about any updates to cost. If a client qualifies for services, full payment is due at the first session following screening. If a client does not qualify for services, no fee is collected for the screening session. If a client begins services after weekly sessions have begun, a pro-rated fee may be offered. Clients will not be refunded for missed sessions, nor will clients be refunded if they decide to discontinue services.
EIU School Psychology graduate students are energetic and personable! They enjoy working with children and families and look forward to providing intervention that is fun and enjoyable! aiclinic@eiu.edu | 217-581-2323
