Graduate Record Exam

If you are thinking about going to graduate school it will be important to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).  There is a general GRE that covers verbal and mathematical skills and there are subject GREs.  Before taking these exams it is a good idea to go through the study guides and other preparations.

The General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that are necessary for any field of study.  .

General Test scores are often used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records to get an idea of the level of each student compared to the national averages.   These scores can be very important as a filter for admission to a graduate program.  You can go to the GRE web page to learn more.  https://www.ets.org/gre

GRE

The GRE costs money to take.  The cost coupled with the importance of the exam should make you want to take this test very seriously.  Study for it using the study guides available.  There are a number of publications designed to help you prepare for the general exam.  Go to the website to find them:  https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/?WT.ac=gre_prepare_170731

You may also need to take the subject exam for the area that you wish to continue your studies in.  Just like the general exam it is a good idea to prepare for this exam.  You can find info about this exam at: https://www.ets.org/gre/subject/about/content/physics

There are a number of exam dates and locations.  You should register early for these exams because some locations fill up and you might not be able to take the exam there.  Plan to take the exams late in your Junior year or early in your Senior year.  Some people take them more than once so that they have a chance to improve their scores.
