On Tuesday, November 14th, Dr. Mylan Engel, Jr. will present Eating Sustainably, Eating Well. What is sustainability and why does it matter? Dr. Engel will explain what sustainability is and why it matters. Next, he will highlight some ways that humans collectively are not living sustainably. Finally, he will discuss simple, effective ways that each of us could significantly reduce our ecological footprint at mealtimes. When we eat well, we not only improve our own health, we improve the health of the planet for future generations.

Dr. Engel is a Presidential Engagement Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He directed The Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals from 2002 to 2016 and is currently a Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics in Oxford, England. The event is hosted by Philosophy Club and snacks will be provided! Please join us on Tuesday, November 14th, from 4:00-6:00 pm in Coleman Auditorium, 1255 Coleman Hall. Everyone is welcome!

Short Bio

 

Mylan Engel Jr., Ph.D., is Presidential Engagement Professor, Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Professor of Philosophy at Northern Illinois University and a recipient of NIU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He is also a Faculty Associate of NIU’s Environment, Sustainability, and Energy Institute. His areas of specialization are epistemology, animal ethics, environmental ethics, and the philosophy of food. His books include: The Philosophy of Animal Rights: A Brief Introduction for Students and Teachers and The Moral Rights of Animals. He directed the Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals from 2002-2016 and is currently a Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics in Oxford, England.
