Subject: Ongoing university commitments

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform the EIU community of three important ongoing commitments of the university.

Commitment to diversity. The university administration affirms its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion as embodied in our university mission statement.

Commitment to free speech. The university administration reaffirms its respect for diversity of opinion and its support of an environment for the exercise of academic freedom and the exercise of free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Commitment to enforcement. A shared commitment to diversity and free speech by all of us--students, faculty, staff and administration--makes the EIU community stronger; we do not want to fall short in our commitment. If any member of the university community believes they have suffered harassment, discrimination, violation of constitutional rights or civil rights, that information should be brought to our Office of Civil Rights and Diversity. Allegations will be investigated. This has been and continues to be our practice.

These commitments guide the administration in its consideration of all university matters.

As always, I welcome any members of the EIU community who wish to meet with me to discuss university matters to call me at 581-2011 or email me at wlperry@eiu.edu.

Sincerely,

Bill Perry
President
