Subject: Increase in Ransomware Attacks

In our current environment, universities and colleges are being heavily targeted for malicious
attacks. Attackers aim to disrupt and steal information. There are a few things you can do to be aware of and prevent these types of attacks.

Sophos Antivirus
Make sure you have Sophos Antivirus installed and up to date. Sophos is a blue shield with
an ‘S’ in the middle; you will see this icon in your system tray (for Windows) or in the top right menu (for Mac). If you have any warnings about it being out of date, please contact the Help Desk immediately at 581-4357.

Email best practices

Be aware of phishing.
Look at who emails you. Did it come from EIU or did it come from an external email host such as Gmail or Hotmail?
Do not open attachments you are not expecting.
Do not click on links within email, type the website into your browser manually.
Don’t reuse your email password on other websites.
Running the latest operating system

Make sure you have all of your security patches installed.
If your EIU computer is not running Windows 10, please contact Help Desk to get the machine upgraded.
Upgrade your Mac to the latest operating system available.
Be aware of what you install

Make sure your web browsers are up to date.
Do not install any software not approved by EIU.
Avoid browser plugins or applications like coupon printers.
