EIU celebrates Latino Heritage Month with vibrant event series this fall

(Charleston, IL) – Eastern Illinois University leaders and representatives of EIU’s Office of Belonging, Access and Engagement (OBAE) are proud to announce a dynamic series of events in celebration of Latino Heritage Month in September, October and November. EIU’s Latino Heritage Month (LHM) planning committee has curated a diverse range of cultural, educational, and community-building experiences that highlight the richness and resilience of Latino heritage. The series, titled "Buscando El Paraíso: El Sol Sale Para Todos" (Seeking Paradise: The Sun Rises for All), kicked off on Monday, September 9, with a study abroad information session featuring La Universidad Veritas in Costa Rica. The month-long celebration includes poetry readings, cultural performances, voter registration drives, academic recognition, and more.Highlights of the series so far have included a poetry reading by acclaimed poet Brenda Cardenas, a lively flag-raising ceremony and Latin market, and a showcase of Latino talent featuring music, dance, and literature. The series will conclude with a Dia de los Muertos Awards and Recognition Night November 16, honoring the achievements of students, faculty, and staff who have empowered the Latino community at EIU.
