EIU to host “Eating Sustainably, Eating Well” event November 14

Nov-10-2023

(Charleston, IL) – Eastern Illinois University will host Dr. Mylan Engel, Jr. Tuesday, November 14 as he presents “Eating Sustainably, Eating Well” from 4 to 6 p.m. on campus in Coleman Auditorium (Room 1255) in Coleman Hall, located at 2011 4th Street in Charleston, Illinois.

Engel will explain what sustainability is and why it matters before highlighting some ways that humans collectively are not living as sustainably as they could. Finally, he will discuss simple, effective ways participants can significantly reduce their ecological footprint at mealtimes.

“When we eat well, we not only improve our own health, we improve the health of the planet for future generations,” Engel says.

Engel is a Presidential Engagement Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. He directed The Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals from 2002 to 2016 and is currently a Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics in Oxford, England.

This event is hosted by Philosophy Club and sponsored by EIU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Margaret and Jack Redden Fund for the Improvement of Undergraduate Education. The event is free and open to the public, and snacks will be provided.

For additional information about this event, contact Jonelle DePetro, chair of EIU’s Department of Philosophy, at (217) 581-3012.
