Purpose
This website documents and disseminates the work of the Council on Academic Affairs (CAA) Committee on General Education and University Learning Goals.
CAA approved a resolution to establish this standing committee on April 25, 2013.
Improving Learning Outcomes
through Increased Academic Rigor
The initial charge of this Committee will be to implement a plan "focused on improving student learning outcomes at the university through systemic increase in academic rigor and improvement of curricular, instructional, and assessment practices in both the general education and major programs."
This plan, if adopted, will be developed and implemented from Fall 2013 through Spring 2018, and will consist of four major tasks:
-
To refine, develop, clarify, and publicize the University Learning Goals in order to support increased rigor in both the General Education and major programs;
-
To facilitate authentic inclusion of the University Learning Goals in both the General Education and major programs through best practices in course proposals, syllabus writing, and program review;
-
To distribute responsibility for University Learning Goal-oriented curriculum in order to (a) create a strong foundation for freshmen and (b) systematically build on that foundation in the segments of General Education;
-
To encourage and support systematic extension of the University Learning Goals into discipline-specific curricular, instructional, and assessment practices in each major program.
