EIU MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY OR SPORTS ADMINISTRATION

Graduate Assistantships

The EIU Department of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) offers five Exercise Physiology Graduate Assistantships (GA) each year. These GAs are a great opportunity for graduate students, accepted to the KSR Exercise Physiology program, who want to gain hands-on experiences in addition to graduate coursework.  In addition to these positions, KSR graduate students also frequently secure Graduate Assistantships with EIU Athletics, Campus Recreation, the Bowling Alley, and others.  For a list of all campus units offering GA's please see the EIU Graduate School's website.

The Exercise Physiology Graduate Assistantships are designed to coincide with the 1-year Exercise Physiology Master’s program starting in the fall semester and concluding at the end of the spring semester. Compensation includes a monthly stipend for 18 hours of work per week in the department and a tuition waiver for fall and spring semesters. An additional tuition waiver for the summer semester is available for Graduate Assistants who adequately fulfill their GA responsibilities in the fall and spring semesters.

Applications will be reviewed by the KSR Graduate faculty starting in the spring semester prior to the year to which a student is applying. Qualified applicants will be interviewed beginning the month of March and interviews will continue until all positions are filled. Only applicants with a completed EIU Graduate School application will be considered. For more information, please contact Dr. Stacey Ruholl, at slruholl@eiu.edu.

Purpose

Our Graduate Assistantships provide experiences in teaching undergraduate activity courses, supervising and mentoring undergraduate students in the Assessment, Testing, and Prescription Lab, and working with the EIU Adult Fitness Program. Each graduate assistant will work in those three areas throughout each semester. Direct, hands-on experience will be gained in teaching undergraduate students, physical fitness assessment of adult clients, as well as the development of good organizational skills, management skills and effective communication skills.

Qualifications

Students chosen for Exercise Physiology Graduate Assistantships for the Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation Department should demonstrate high levels of academic achievement at the undergraduate level with strong academic preparation in physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. The following criteria will be considered when awarding Graduate Assistantships:

  • Applicants must be accepted to the EIU Graduate School.
  • Candidates for the assistantships must be completing, or have graduated with, a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or other related Allied Health field.
  • Applicants with high GPA and extensive experience in physical fitness assessment are preferred.
  • Additional consideration will be given to those with certification in NSCA-CPT and NSCA-CSCS.
  • Candidates must have current CPR/AED certification and must maintain certification through the academic year for which they are applying.

How To Apply:

Students who are interested in obtaining a Graduate Assistantship must complete a separate graduate assistantship application. Once a student has been fully admitted to the Exercise Physiology program, he/she can be considered for a graduate assistantship. The review of graduate assistant applications begins in January for the following fall-spring term. Applications are considered until all positions are filled - so apply early!
