EIU Freshman Connection

Description of Curriculum

  • Students participating in the program will be enrolled in the one-semester University Foundations course, and they will receive two credit hours for their participation. Approximately 300 freshmen and 75 transfers will participate. (Transfer students and frehsmen entering during spring semester will not take University Foundations.)
  • Students will have a meal with their group once a week during the fall and spring semesters. The meetings will cover aspects of the program curriculum previously covered in the Foundations Course. Mentors will help clarify discussions, answer questions, and provide anecdotal examples to support the Foundations Course material presented to freshmen, helping them retain important information.
  • In addition to curriculum assistance, meetings allow for students to informally talk with their mentor and other freshman peers about their current experiences, enhancing peer communication and giving mentees additional resources of support and information.
  • Graduate assistants will host meetings with the mentors once a month during both the fall and spring semesters. These meetings will act as regular check-ins for the mentor to discuss how their mentor groups are going, review curriculum and goals, and acquire additional leadership skills.
