EIU Master of Arts in English

Reach Your Goal of Earning an MA!

If you've had the wonderful experience of taking English 5585 (the Summer Writing Project for K-12 Teachers), then you've already earned 6 credits towards the 18 credits required for the Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing.

What you may not know is that you are well on your way to earning your MA in English--just 30 credits plus the thesis! With more online grad courses available (see courses here), you may be able to complete your MA in just under 3 years.

Here's a sample schedule with the goal of completing the MA degree. Note that "English grad class" includes English 4750 and above courses, but that only 9 credits (or 3 classes) at the 4750 through 5000 level may be counted toward the MA degree.

Summer 1: English 5585 Summer Writing Project = 6 credits
[accelerated track: Summer 1: online English grad class (usually 5061 Special Topics, repeatable) = 3 credits]
Fall 1: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Spring 1: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Summer 2: online English grad class = 3 credits
18 credits = Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing

Fall 2: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Spring 2: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Summer 3: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Fall 3: online or on-campus English grad class = 3 credits
Spring 3: English 5950 Thesis Writing = 3 credits
30 credits plus 3 credits Thesis Writing = MA degree
