Detailed Steps to Becoming EIU
Dear prospective graduate student,
Thank you for your interest in pursuing a master’s degree at EIU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In order to be admitted,
- you must first apply to the Graduate School by submitting an online application.
- then, the Chemistry Graduate Committee will evaluate your application and decide on your admission into the program.
Key points to consider when submitting your application:
- Application requires a $30 non-refundable fee (cannot be waived; if you defer your application for another semester, the fee must be paid again).
- GRE is optional (if you have it, please provide it with your application).
- If your undergraduate classes were taught in English, English proficiency is not necessary.
- There is no need to contact a faculty member before or during the application process.
- Eligibility and acceptance for the program will be determined by the graduate committee based on your credentials (transcript, letters of recommendation, etc.).
- Scholarship (GA) offers (if available) are made only to admitted students; thesis students have priority over non-thesis students.

Admission deadlines:
Fall Semester (courses begin in August): May 15th to apply for admission, May 30th to complete file.
Spring Semester (courses begin in January): October 15 to apply for admission, October 30th to complete file.
Grade Point Average (GPA): minimum 2.75 out of 4.0.
