EIU Master of Science in Counseling

The Simple Steps to Becoming EIU

The M.S. in Counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP).

  • Deadline for submitting materials: Jan. 31, 2025. (NOTE: Please make application to the Graduate School in a timely manner to assure that the department receives the items by Jan. 31). Application to the Graduate School and Counseling program are both done in MyEIU.
  • The 2025 Interview day will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, for those who are invited to interview. This interview is mandatory to be considered for admission.
  • All new fully-admitted students will be considered for the Paul Ward Scholarship of up to $2,500 for your first year.
  • School Counseling: Students are required to submit a criminal background investigation. Please contact the office at che@eiu.edu for more details.

Apply to the Graduate School

All students can apply to the graduate school through MyEIU. The graduate school requires:

  1. A copy of your official transcripts
  2. A $30 application fee

Apply to the Program

Applicants also apply to the Counseling program in MyEIU.

The program application requires:

  1. Email addresses for two references who are familiar with your academic work and potential for graduate study.
  2. Current resume or c-v.
  3. A short essay discussing your intent to become a counselor. This essay will also be used for the Paul Ward Scholarship application.

Apply for an Assistantship

If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you also need to submit a graduate assistantship application.

Graduate assistantships are typically awarded in accordance with the academic year. Assistantship applications are normally accepted through the middle of February; a decision for the next academic year comes within a month. For more information about graduate assistantships, please click here.
