The Ballenger Teachers Center houses an extensive Juvenile Collection with fiction and non-fiction books for PreK-12 children. The primary purpose of the collection is to support the needs of our pre-service teachers in the College of Education and Professional Studies as they do their coursework and lesson planning. With this in mind, the BTC Coordinator maintains a robust, current collection of children's books that mirrors areas covered in the Illinois Learning Standards.
Every year, the BTC Coordinator collects the latest publications in PreK through Young Adult Literature. Priorities include the American Library Association's Youth Media Award Winners, the National Book Award for Young People, other award winners, the Illinois Young Readers Choice Awards, and best book lists of various national education associations. The Coordinator selects other well-reviewed titles by consulting various review journals including, The Horn Book Magazine, School Library Journal, and The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books.
The Juvenile Collection uses the Dewey Decimal System. The Dewey Decimal System is a numeric system that groups books into different subjects.
