Eastern Illinois University has been approved by the State of Illinois to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). NC-SARA is a voluntary agreement among its member states and U.S. territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance-education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by post-secondary institutions based in another state.  Eastern Illinois University is authorized to provide online courses to students in the SARA states.  We are also authorized to offer online courses in California.

**Domestic students admitted to online degree programs are assessed tuition at Illinois resident rates (except for online programs with differential tuition, e.g. MBA).  International students will be assessed tuition at the international student rate.

On-Ground Field Experience

Courses and programs incorporating a “supervised field experience” are covered by the provisions of SARA. Under SARA a “supervised field experience” means a student learning experience under the oversight of a supervisor, mentor, faculty member or other qualified professional, located in the host state, who has a direct or indirect reporting responsibility to the institution where the student is enrolled, whether or not credit is granted. Examples include internships, practicum, and independent study.

Professional Licensure Issues

SARA has no effect on state professional licensing requirements. Distance education programs in nursing, etc., may require additional approval from separate licensing boards, depending on the state. Students that reside outside the state of Illinois who are considering a professional program should contact the appropriate Board in their state of residency prior to beginning a course of study. EIU cannot confirm whether the course or program meets requirements for professional licensure in the student’s state of residence.
