Join us for a powerful and inspiring evening of music and history with "Oh Freedom! Songs of the Civil Rights Movement," featuring award-winning Illinois folk singer Chris Vallillo. This special performance delves into the profound role that music played in one of the most significant social movements in American history. The Civil Rights Movement was not only a fight for justice and equality but also one of the greatest singing movements our country has ever seen. From iconic anthems like "We Shall Overcome" to "This Little Light of Mine," music helped unify the movement, energize protests, and spread the message of freedom across the nation.

Chris Vallillo will perform some of the most pivotal songs of the era that served as both inspiration and a rallying cry for those fighting for civil rights. As he performs these powerful pieces, Vallillo will also share personal stories and historical accounts of the movement, offering a deeper understanding of how music played an essential role in motivating the nonviolent protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other key figures.

This concert was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, and it brings the music and history of that era to life in a way that is both moving and educational. Vallillo’s unique blend of storytelling and musical talent will transport you back to the days of the Freedom Riders, the jails of Montgomery, Alabama, and Parchman Prison, all the way to Washington D.C., where the movement's message echoed throughout the nation.

Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to experience history through music. "Oh Freedom!" is a free event, but space is limited, so be sure to register in advance to secure your spot. Visit go.eiu.edu/freedom for more information and to reserve your seat.
