Human Services Degree Options

Coursework includes experiential learning opportunities including practicums, service learning, and work-place internships. Graduates become leaders in a wide range of human services programs that improve quality of life for individuals, families and communities throughout the lifespan through the administration of human services such as developmental adult residential services, family financial counseling, divorce education, addiction prevention and recovery, child care administration, child and youth community programming, court advocacy, support for the incarcerated and their families, senior case management, hospice services, domestic violence and homeless shelter administration, sexual assault crises support, and reproductive education.

    The M.S. in Human Services focuses on applying research and theory to career practice, engaging in experiential learning, and mentoring of students. Courses address global and community family issues and trends, family culture and diversity, human services program planning and leadership, lifespan development stages from youth to older age, family resource management, financial literacy, family stress and resiliency, public policy, and grant writing.
    • Applications accepted year-round for enrollment
    • Minimum GPA of 2.75
    • Our program welcomes new and returning students, high school/middle school teachers, established professionals continuing in career development, and recent undergraduates.
    • Students may elect to enroll full-time or part-time.

    TRANSFER HOURS ACCEPTED
    The Graduate School and the Human Services Graduate Coordinator will evaluate up to a maximum of 12 transfer hours completed in another institution’s accredited graduate program.

    ONLINE OR IN-PERSON FORMAT
    Students choose an online or a hybrid (online + face-to-face course delivery) format. The online option requires no on-campus visits and all online students, regardless of residency location, are charged in-state tuition rates.

    GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS AVAILABLE
    Graduate Assistants provide teaching, research, and service support in the Department of Human Services and in the Child and Family Life Education Center. Assistantships fund students with a three-semester tuition waiver along with a monthly stipend.

    ACCELERATED GRADUATE PROGRAM  FOR EIU UNDERGRADUATES
    Admission to the accelerated MS in Human Services requires that a student has completed a minimum of 60 hours of undergraduate or transfer course credit and has a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25. In addition, applicants must have completed a minimum of 15 hours of Human Services courses.

    ADMISSION
    To apply for the accelerated MS in Human Services,
    applicants must meet the above requirements and submit an application at: go.eiu.edu/acceladmit.

    Upon acceptance to the program, students must complete the shared course request form and submit to the Graduate Coordinator: go.eiu.edu/courserequest.

    The interdisciplinary, online M.S. in Aging Studies: Long Term Care Administration option at Eastern Illinois University is a graduate program designed to launch or expand careers as 
    an administrative director and in other leadership positions in residential skilled and rehabilitative health care, nursing homes, assisted livings, memory care, and independent living programs. Plans of study are individually tailored to meet students’ needs and courses are aligned with long term care administration competency areas.

    Our program welcomes students at all stages of professional development, including those in the workforce and those who have recently completed an undergraduate degree. Students may enroll full-time or part-time.

    The Aging Studies minor is an 18-hour interdisciplinary program designed to offer students the opportunity to gain expertise on the holistic process of aging and developmentally appropriate and responsive professional practice related to health, family support, public policy, and socio-cultural issues.
