Academic Year 2024-25: Enhancing Digital Accessibility @ EIU

Create, Audit, Remediate, Upload

This ISTS workshop series is designed to help faculty create and maintain accessible digital content that meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards. These sessions will guide faculty and staff through effective practices for making course materials in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote accessible. Participants will also learn how to create and audit accessible PDFs with Adobe Acrobat, and ensure D2L content—including pages, media, and assessments—is fully compliant.

Additionally, specialized workshops on video accessibility with Kaltura and creating other accessible multimedia content are offered. For faculty and staff focused on continuous improvement, sessions on conducting accessibility audits and developing action plans to maintain ongoing compliance will be provided. The workshops are scheduled throughout the Fall and Spring semesters, with specific dates and locations listed for each topic.

Workshop 1: Microsoft Word

  • Accessibility in Microsoft Word and Word 365, 
    • Create accessible Word documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit Word documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate Word documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Upload Word documents in D2L that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 2: Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Accessibility in Microsoft PowerPoint and PowerPoint 365
    • Create accessible PowerPoint documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit PowerPoint documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate PowerPoint documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Upload PowerPoint documents in D2L that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 3: Microsoft Excel

  • Accessibility in Microsoft Excel and Excel 365

Workshop 4: Microsoft OneNote

  • Accessibility in Microsoft OneNote and OneNote 365
    • Create accessible OneNote documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit OneNote documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate OneNote documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Upload OneNote documents in D2L that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 5: Creating Accessible PDFs with Adobe Acrobat

  • Accessibility in Adobe Acrobat Pro:
    • Create accessible PDF documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit PDF documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate PDF documents in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Upload PDF documents in D2L that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 6: D2L Content Pages, Dropboxes, and Quizzes

  • Accessibility in Key D2L content areas
    • Create accessible D2L content in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit D2L content in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate D2L content in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Publish D2L content that meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 7: D2L Video, Audio, and Images

  • Accessibility in Key D2L media

    • Remediate D2L media in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Publish D2L media that meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 8: Video Accessibility and Captioning with Kaltura

  • Accessibility in Kaltura:
    • Create accessible Kaltura videos in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Audit Kaltura videos in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Remediate Kaltura videos in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
    • Embed Kaltura videos in D2L that meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 9: Accessible Online Assessments

  • Topics:
    • Principles of accessible quiz and assessment design
    • Creating accessible question types and response options in D2L Brightspace
    • Providing accommodations and alternative formats for assessments
    • Using the D2L Brightspace accessibility checker for assessments
  • Dates:
    • Spring: January 28^ (12:30 pm), January 29* (3:00 pm)

Workshop 10: Accessible Audio and other Multimedia Content

  • Accessibility for Multimedia and Interactive Content:
    • Create accessible audio and multimedia content in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

    • Remediate audio and multimedia content in order to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards

Workshop 11: Accessibility Audits and Continuous Improvement 

  • Topics:
    • Conducting accessibility audits of course materials and online content
    • Tools and resources for ongoing accessibility monitoring and improvement
    • Building an accessibility action plan for continuous compliance
    • Collaborating with institutional accessibility resources and support
  • Dates:
