EIU Department of Educational Leadership

Specialist Degree in Education (EDS)

Specialist Degree in Education (EDS).  The mission of the Specialist in Educational Leadership (EDL) is to provide more advanced and intensive graduate study of educational administration.  This degree requires a minimum of 33 semester hours above the Master's Degree.

Superintendents Endorsement Program (SEP).  Individuals admitted to the EDS program who hold a general Administrator or Principal Endorsement, and have a minimum of two (2) years administrative experience in possession of that endorsement, are also eligible to apply to the SEP.  Upon completion of SEP and passage of the required test(s) and administrative academies, individuals are eligible for the Illinois Superintendent Endorsement. 

The required coursework is as follows ...

  • EDL 6200 - Evaluating Student Achievement (4 hrs.)
  • EDL 6600 - Organizational Development (4)
  • EDL 6650 - Superintendent of Schools (4)
  • EDL 6700 - Planning & Evaluation of Instructional Programs (3)
  • EDL 6800 - Current Issues in Educational Leadership (4)
  • EDL 6810 - Seminar:  School Operations & the Law (2)
  • EDL 6850 - School Plant Planning (2)
  • EDL 6860 - School Finance (3)
  • EDL 6870 - Professionarl Negotiation:  Collective Bargaining in Education (3)
  • EDL 6910A - Field Experience in Educational Leadership (2) *
    • Offered each FALL semester
  • EDL 6910B - Field Experience in Educational Administration (2) *
    • Offered each SPRING semester

All hours included in a student's plan of study MUST be completed within a 6-year time limit.
