Department Mission Statement

The Counseling and Higher Education program at EIU has a tradition of excellence in providing graduate student education in higher education and counseling environments. The goal is to prepare graduate students in helping professions that advance the social, professional, and personal well-being of students in our programs. Our programs strive for excellence in education based on our university and community partnerships, technology application, and developing research in the field. The department focuses on preparing all of its students to work and collaborate with a diverse community.

The Department of Counseling and Higher Education houses two master's degree programs. The M.S. in Counseling and M.S. in College Student Affairs.

Graduate Programs

M.S. in Counseling

Our M.S. in Counseling is a "First Choice" 60-hour program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). Students can pursue an emphasis in either Clinical Mental Health Counseling resulting in License Professional Counseling (LPC) or School Counseling resulting in the Professional Educator's License (PEL). M.S. in College Student Affairs

The M.S. in College Student Affairs (CSA) is a "First Choice" 48 hours degree program that provides a dynamic curriculum for students interested in leadership careers in the field of student affairs in higher education. Click here for more information on this program.

M.S. in Higher Education and Community College Online

The online option was designed for the working professional looking to gain additional knowledge in the area of Community College and Higher Education. Click here for more information on this program.
