MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON GRADUATE STUDIES April 20, 1999

The Council on Graduate Studies met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.

Members present: Dr. Augustine, Dr. Benedict, Dr. Carson, Dr. C. Helsel, Dr. Kayser, Ms. Kerrick, Dr. Lenihan, Dr. Raybin, Dr. Reven, Dr. L. Simpson.

Member absent: Dr. Liu.

Staff present: Ms. Salesberry, Graduate School.

I. The Minutes of April 6, 1999, were approved as published.

II. Communications:

    1. Council members were requested to complete summer schedules.
    2. A tentative schedule for the Library move was distributed.
    3. A reminder from Dr. Tidwell regarding the retirement reception.
    4. Memo from Dean Hohengarten regarding committee assignments.

III. 99-7 BIO 5380, Landscape Ecology, New Course.

Dr. Kayser moved and Dr. Raybin seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda. Discussion and voting will be later.

IV. 99-4 CGS Retreat/Informational Meeting.

Dr. Raybin moved and Dr. Kayser seconded the motion to schedule this meeting for August 31 from 2 - 8 p.m. in the Union. The motion passed by consensus. This meeting will include former and present members of the Council. Dean Augustine will send packets out one month prior to the meeting.

V. 99-5 GSAC Student Representative.

Dr. Carson moved and Dr. Raybin seconded the motion to schedule a rotation of the Colleges so a student representative would be available at the beginning of the Fall semester. The motion passed unanimously. Dean Augustine will prepare the schedule.

VI. 99-8 Election of Officers.

Dr. Carson moved and Dr. Helsel seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda and suspend the rules and act on it.

Chair: Dr. Simpson nominated Dr. Lenihan. Hearing no other nominations Chair Benedict closed the nominations. Dr. Lenihan was elected Chair by acclamation.

Vice Chair: Dr. Raybin nominated Dr. Simpson. Hearing no other nominations Chair Benedict closed the nominations. Dr. Simpson was elected Vice Chair by acclamation.

VII. Executive Director's Report.

    1. Dr. Surles suggested producing a graduate research publication.
    2. Dean Augustine reported on the MAGS conference he attended.
    3. The following items have been approved by Executive Action to become effective Fall 1999:

1. CDS 5400, Prerequisite: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.

2. CDS 5800, Discussion of current trends in specific disorders or professional issues in communication disorders and sciences. May be repeated for a maximum of three semester hours of credit. Prerequisite: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.

3. CDS 5900, Prerequisite: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.

4. CDS 5910, Prerequisite: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.

5. CDS 5960, Prerequisite: Acceptance by the practicum site; 3 semester hours of CDS 5900 with a grade of B or better for each of the three hours and completion of 22 semester hours of CDS graduate course work with an average grade of B or better, or permission of the department chairperson.

6. CDS 5970, Clinical experience in a school setting approved by the department. To be taken credit/no credit for a maximum of three semester hours applicable to the degree. Prerequisites: Acceptance by the practicum site; admission to teacher education; completion of all CDS graduate course work except CDS 5980 and CDS 5890 and a grade of B or better in at least 7 semester hours of CDS 5900, 5910, 5920, 5960 or permission of the department chairperson.

7. CDS 5980, Clinical experience in a nonschool setting approved by the department. To be taken credit/no credit for a maximum of three semester hours applicable to the degree. Prerequisites: Acceptance by the practicum site; completion of all CDS graduate course work except CDS 5970 and CDS 5890 and a grade of B or better in at least seven semester hours of CDS 5900, 5910, 5920, 5960 or permission of the department chairperson.

8. CDS 5920, Audiology Clinical Practice. Supervised diagnostic evaluations and/or rehabilitation with a variety of auditory disorders. Prerequisite: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.

4. The following items were approved by Executive Action and became effective Fall 1997:
