MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON GRADUATE STUDIES April 6, 1999
The Council on Graduate Studies met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, 1999, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.
Members present: Dr. Augustine, Dr. Benedict, Dr. Carson, Dr. Kayser, Ms. Kerrick, Dr. Lenihan, Dr. Liu, Dr. Raybin, Dr. Reven, Dr. L. Simpson.
Member absent: Dr. C. Helsel.
Staff present: Ms. Herrington-Perry, Ms. Bock, Academic Affairs.
Guest present: Dr. J. Wayland.
I. The Minutes of March 30, 1999, were approved as published.
II. 99-3 MBA Concentration in Accountancy, New Concentration.
Dr. Jane Wayland, School of Business, presented the new concentration. The motion to approve the new concentration passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000:
M.B.A. Degree with Concentration in Accountancy
Aim
The M.B.A. degree with a concentration in accountancy is designed to provide coursework to enable students with an undergraduate degree in accountancy to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination. Beginning in 2001, only individuals who have completed 150 semester hours of college credit will be eligible to take the CPA examination in the state of Illinois. Students who complete both an undergraduate accountancy degree program and the M.B.A. Degree with Concentration in Accountancy generally will have sufficient college credit hours to sit for the Illinois CPA examination.

Students enrolled in the M.B.A. with Concentration in Accountancy program must complete the courses listed below. Before enrolling in a course, students must meet all prerequisites for that course.

The program is designated as a Concentration in Accountancy, and all transcripts and diplomas of graduates will indicate "Master of Business Administration with Concentration in Accountancy (Concen: Accountancy)."

Dr. Lenihan moved and Dr. Simpson seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda. Discussion and voting will be later.
V. 99-6 Student Appeals (SA1).
Dr. Lenihan moved and Dr. Raybin seconded the motion to waive the rules and put this item on the agenda and act on it. Motion passed by consensus. Dr. Augustine presented the information and explained the issue. Dr. Lenihan moved and Dr. Carson seconded the motion to approve the appeal contingent upon the student receiving a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the Spring '99 semester grading period. The motion passed unanimously.
Ms. Kerrick joined the meeting during the discussion of this item.
VI. Executive Director's Report.
Section of the catalog: Completion of the Field Experience Paper
"All candidates earning degrees in degree programs or options requiring a field experience paper must have the paper and its abstract approved and deposited in the degree granting department by the official close of the semester or term published in the Class Schedule."
2. Dean Augustine was pleased that the Assessment Plan Task Force included the following in its list of recommendations:
"7. The Graduate School and appropriate constituencies (e.g., CGS and graduate coordinators) should develop an assessment plan focusing on establishing the general, cross-disciplinary objectives of graduate programming, measuring their attainment, and taking appropriate steps to improve graduate student learning."
VII. 99-4 CGS Retreat/Informational Meeting.
This item was postponed by consensus until the April 20 meeting.
VIII. 98-43 Thesis Guidelines Revision.
This item was postponed by consensus until a revision is presented in the Fall 99 semester.
