MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON GRADUATE STUDIES

September 15, 1998

The Council on Graduate Studies met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 1998, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.

Members present: Dr. Augustine, Dr. Benedict, Dr. Carson, Dr. C. Helsel, Dr. Kayser, Dr. Lenihan, Dr. Liu, Dr. Raybin, Dr. Reven, Dr. L. Simpson.

Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Dr. Evans, Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: Dr. M. Brown, Dr. D. Carwell, Dr. S. Dudley, Dr. W. Kirk, Dr. L. Prater, Dr. R. Wandling, Dr. J. Wolski.

Chair Benedict requested the order be altered to accommodate the guests.

  1. Chair Benedict welcomed Dr. Teshome Abebe, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Council members introduced themselves.

II. Minutes.

The Minutes of September 1, 1998, were approved as published.

III. 97-17R New Course Proposal, FCS 5235, International Special Topics in Family and Consumer Sciences.

Dr. Martha Brown, Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. Dr. Lenihan moved and Dr. Carson seconded the motion to postpone this item until a sample course syllabus is presented along with the course proposal. The motion to postpone passed by consensus.

IV. 98-38 PLS 5433, Proseminar in Comparative Politics, New Course.

Dr. David Carwell, Political Science, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve this new course passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 1999:

PLS 5433, Proseminar in Comparative Politics. (3-0-3) PROSEM COM POL. An introduction to the study of Comparative Politics at the graduate level.

V. 98-39 Political Science Major, Revision.

Dr. Richard Wandling, Political Science, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve this revision passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 1999:

Graduation Requirements: A total of 30 semester hours with the thesis, or 32 semester hours with the comprehensive examination option, and a GPA of 3.00. All students will complete 12 hours of course work for a major concentration and six hours for a minor concentration. Students are required to take core courses in their major field. Students majoring in American Government and Politics must take two of the following courses: PLS 4853, 5073, 5173, 5273. Students majoring in Comparative Politics/International Relations must take both PLS 5433 and 5023. Students majoring in Public Administration must take PLS 5543. PLS 5053 is required of all graduate students.

VI. 98-40 PSY 5800, Psychotherapy with Diverse Populations, New Course.

Dr. William Kirk, Dr. Genie Lenihan, and Dr. Morton Heller, Psychology, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve this new course passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 1999:

PSY 5800, Psychotherapy with Diverse Populations. (3-0-3) SP. THERAPY DIV POP. A theoretical and applied consideration of the gender, racial, sexual orientation, disability, belief, and cultural differences which impact psychological services with diverse individuals, families and groups. Theories of prejudice, stereotyping and issues of culture and psychopathology will be applied to an understanding of the unique mental health needs of a variety of populations. Prerequisite: Admission to the clinical internship or permission of professor.

VII. 98-41 THA 4834, Methods of Play Production in Middle and Secondary Schools, New Course.

Dr. Jean Wolski, Theatre Arts, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve this new course passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Summer 1999:

THA 4834, Methods of Play Production in Middle and Secondary Schools. (2-3-3) SU. PLAY PRODUCTION. The course focuses on the special problems of play production in the public schools for non-theatre majors. Prerequisite: Graduate or senior standing or permission of the instructor.

VIII. 98-42 MBA 5540, International Business, New Course.

Dr. Sidney Dudley, School of Business, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve this new course passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 1999:

MBA 5540, International Business. (3-0-3) On Demand. INT BUS. Intensive study of contemporary problems, issues, trends, and development in international business. Prerequisites: Completion of Phase I courses and admission to the MBA program.

IX. Communications.

1. E-Mail from Dr. Jill Nilsen requesting a representative for the Honorary Degree Committee. Dr. Benedict will serve.

2. COTE Minutes of August 25, 1998.

3. CAA Minutes of August 27 and September 3, 1998.

X. Committee Reports.

1. Policies/Catalog Subcommittee met and set up a schedule for regular meetings.

2. Thesis Guidelines Subcommittee reported that Dean Augustine sent out a memo requesting input from department chairs of graduate programs and graduate coordinators.

XI. 98-46 SPC 4765, Communication in Families, New Course.

98-47 CHM 5100, Advanced Analytical Chemistry, New Course.

Dr. Carson moved and Dr. Helsel seconded the motion to put these items on the agenda. Voting will be later.

XII. 98-3 Revision of Course Proposal Criteria for Courses 4750-4999.

The latest proposal was distributed at the meeting. By consensus, this item was postponed until the next meeting.

Dr. Reven exited at this point.

XIII. Executive Director=s Report.

Dean Augustine presented the following information to the Council:

    1. Graduate Faculty Status Report. Below is the table that reflects Graduate Faculty Status Count by College. A complete copy of this report is available for review in the Graduate School.

2. Excerpts from the FY98 Productivity Report relevant to the IBHE-mandated Review of Graduate Education are available for review in the Provost=s office.

Dr. Helsel and Dr. Kayser exited at this point.

Dr. Carson moved and Dr. Lenihan seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda. Voting will be later.
